26/08/16 Accepting and Refusing Using ‘Thanks’
We often use Thank you / Thanks like Yes, please, to accept offers.
Examples:
- Would you like some candy bars?
- Thank you.
- How many?
To make it clear that one wishes to refuse something, it is normal to say No, thank you / No, thanks. If you just say thanks, the other person will interpret you’re accepting.
Examples:
- Another piece of cake?
- No, thanks. I’ve eaten too much already.
Note that Yes, thanks is not used to accept offers, but to confirm that things are all right.
- Do you have enough potatoes?
- Yes, thanks. Everything is delicious.
