10/05/17 Adequate and Sufficient

e-legal-lesson

Avoid using the qualitative adequate (good enough) to mean quantitatively sufficient (plenty or big enough). In contract law, a legal detriment or anything of economic value is sufficient consideration, but we compare the value of what each party brings to the table to decide whether the consideration is adequate (so that the bargain is fair). Adequate enough is a substandard redundancy.
