A specific provision of a collective bargaining agreement (a union security measure) that requires every company employee – union and nonunion alike — to pay the union an amount equal to the union’s customary initiation fees and monthly dues. It does not require any employee to become a formal member of the union, to be a member before becoming hired, to take any oath, or to follow any internal rules and regulations of the union. The payment to the union is to defray the expenses of the union (as bargaining agent) in negotiations and contract administration.
