Benching occurs when someone you are interested in stops actually hanging out with you or committing to dates, but continues to text you from time to time. It is different from ghosting in that the person is not cutting off communication with you.
Benching is more of a “we will circle back to this later” approach to dating. The person believes there may be someone better for them out there, so they do not want to completely close the door on the benchee (that is, the person being benched).
Example:
I know Sarah is seeing other guys, and I think I’ve been benched.
