A gentlemen’s agreement is an informal, unwritten agreement between two or more parties. It may be simply understood as part of an unspoken agreement by convention or through mutually beneficial etiquette. The essence of a gentlemen’s agreement is that it relies upon the honor and integrity of the parties for its fulfillment, rather than being in any way enforceable. It is, therefore, distinct from a legal agreement or contract, which can be enforced if necessary. An agreement like this is not legally binding and could have a negative effect on business relationships if one party decides to default on their promise. For example, if an employee at a company says they will get you a job and you have nothing to worry about, this is an example of a gentleman’s agreement. However if they are unable to get you the job then you have no legal recourse.
