If you use the phrase in other words in a contract, you’re acknowledging that you failed to state the concept in question clearly enough the first time around. Get it right the first time and you won’t need in other words.
The abbreviated Latinism i.e. (id est, meaning that is) is roughly equivalent to in other words, so don’t use i.e. or that is either.
