19/3/19 Idioms

An idiom is a word, group of words or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is not easily deduced from its literal definition and whose meaning can’t be understood outside its cultural context. These expressions would be nonsensical if read literally. Although most of us only use a few idioms in our everyday speech, it’s believed that there are tens of thousands of them in the English language.

Common idioms are used in the English language in order to convey a concise idea, and are often spoken or are considered informal or conversational.
