Innocent or Guilty? Not Guilty

Innocent is not an option for either a plea or a verdict. A defendant may plead guilty, not guilty, or nolo contendere (no contest). Verdicts are guilty or not guilty. In press accounts the term innocent is used to prevent the possible error of omitting not from the verdict when reporting an acquittal.
