It is what most people think of as a common theft. Larceny is considered a statutory offense and the exact charges can vary depending on the value of the property taken.
Petty and grand larceny
Most states specify different degrees of larceny. Petty larceny is the taking of property whose value is below a certain threshold as defined by statute; it constitutes a misdemeanor in most states. Larceny becomes grand larcenywhen the property taken exceeds a certain value or is accompanied by aggravating circumstances.
