Next of kin refers to the closest relatives of a deceased person. Apart from the blood relatives, most states recognize the spouse or the registered domestic partner as part of the next of kin. This term is also used sometimes to refer to anyone who would inherit part of the estate by the laws of descent and distribution if there is no will.
