Sections and Subsections in Contracts
21/9/17 Sections and Subsections in Contracts
Sections
Each section normally contains all provisions relating to a particular issue, although sometimes in the miscellaneous provisions at the end of a contract one finds lumped together in one section text relating to two or more unrelated topics.
For ease of reference, sections may be numbered. You do not need to place “Section” in front of each section number.
Some drafters use the word “section” to describe each group of sections. I prefer to use the word “article” in that case.
You may also give each section or each article a heading.
Subsections
Sections are frequently divided into two or more separate paragraphs known as subsections. Subsections need to be numbered or lettered.
