The jurisdiction of a court over the subject, type, or cause of action of a case that allows the court to issue a binding judgment. It refers to the nature of the claim or controversy.

Personal Jurisdiction or in personam jurisdiction

The power of a court to hear a lawsuit and to render a decision binding on the persons involved in a civil case, by virtue of the parties having some contact with the place where the court is located.
