The first is the harm <the accident caused damage worth $50,000>, the second the compensation for that harm <the jury awarded $50,000 in damages>. What seems like an obvious distinction – that property sustains damage but a person sustains an injury – does not hold up in legal usage: people are damaged and property injured all the time.
