12/12/19 WHAT DOES “ABDICATE” MEAN? The term “abdicate” may mean 1) to disown, 2) to discard, or 3) to renounce. In legal writing it usually takes on sense 3. Examples: We did not imply that we had abdicated our powers to prevent an unjust forfeiture. The majority, as I see it, has abdicated its responsibility to enforce federal constitutional norms.
